Learning Chinese characters through components and words

Hanzi Tools · Learning guide · Updated 6 November 2026

A character can feel less arbitrary when you notice its parts. In 清、情、晴 and 请, 青 recurs beside different components. The modern sounds are related but not identical. Treat the pattern as a clue you can check, rather than a rule that determines every reading.

Look at structure before inventing a story

Enter a character in the structure tree. IDS symbols show how written parts are arranged: side by side, above and below, or inside an enclosure. This describes a form. It does not by itself tell you how the character developed historically.

The radical and component browser helps you find related forms in the local collection. A component you can see and the radical used for dictionary indexing are not always the same thing.

Use words to keep meanings apart

Compare 未来 and 末尾 when studying 未 and 末. Look at the distinguishing horizontal strokes, then read each word in a sentence. A pair of isolated flashcards can be harder to remember than two words you can use.

Make a memory aid you recognize as a story

Write a short mnemonic if it helps. The memory-story tool keeps your note in this browser. A mnemonic does not need to be historical to be useful, but label it as a memory aid when you share it. Use a documented source for claims about etymology.
