How to read Chinese with pinyin

Hanzi Tools · Learning guide · Updated 6 November 2026

Start with a passage short enough to read twice. A message from a friend, a paragraph from a lesson or one of our original readings is enough. On the first pass, try to understand the situation before looking up every word.

Check words in their sentence

Paste the text into the Chinese text reader with pinyin. Select a word and compare its dictionary meanings with the surrounding sentence. In 我坐地铁去上班, 地铁 means subway. Knowing that word helps you follow how the person gets to work.

Do not assume each character is a separate word. 中文, 朋友 and 上班 are useful units to recognize together. Conversely, a long string may have several possible divisions. Read the whole phrase if one result seems odd.

Hide a little support on the second pass

Read the passage again after checking the meanings. Try to recognize the Chinese before glancing at the pinyin. Say one sentence aloud if a Chinese voice is available on your device, then compare your rhythm with the playback.

Pinyin spellings represent syllables, while running speech also has neutral tones and tone changes. A name or an unusual word may need manual correction. The pinyin converter lets you edit the pronunciation before exporting.

Keep a small vocabulary list

Save a few words that you expect to meet again. Add the original sentence as context. Revisit them through vocabulary review, then return to the passage. Understanding a sentence on a later visit is a useful sign that the practice is helping.
