Choosing Chinese reading practice for beginners

Hanzi Tools · Learning guide · Updated 6 November 2026

“Beginner” covers a wide range. A heritage speaker may understand a spoken sentence but recognize few characters. A learner who knows a textbook list may read those characters and still struggle with a message about an unfamiliar topic.

Try a paragraph before committing to a book

Open a starter passage in the Chinese reading room. Read once without the English reference. Can you identify the people, place and main event? If you need a lookup for nearly every word, choose a shorter text or a more familiar topic.

Chinese graded readers can help you build a habit, but grading systems differ. Do not treat every publisher’s level number as interchangeable with HSK or CEFR. Our Starter and Intermediate labels are editorial descriptions of the passages on this site.

Use pinyin selectively

Check the pinyin when you need the sound, then return your attention to the characters. In the text reader, inspect words in context and save a small selection. Try to recognize each saved word on the next visit before revealing its meaning.

Do something after reading

Answer the comprehension question, retell one event in your own words or change a detail in a sentence. A second reading often reveals a connection you missed on the first. Keep the original nearby so you can compare the new wording.
